Have you seen this list of the 100 Oldest Currently Registered Dot-Com Domain Names? It's a fascinating list of internet history. The first domain on the list is SYMBOLICS.COM and it was registered on March 15, 1985. There are a couple interesting things to point out here:

  • From what I can tell about 80 of the domains are gigantic companies. The likes of Intel, Xerox, Apple and Convergent are all on the list.
  • There are no "market-oriented" domains on the list. For instance, you don't see names like LOAN.COM or PETS.COM. I found that very surprising.

After looking at this list, it seems the corporate behemoths in the US were alerted to register these names by the government before anyone else had ever heard of the internet. Of course, that's just speculation. Thoughts?

A question I often hear from publishers is how to cut down the time it takes for a domain to establish TrustRank. If a domain is already seeded in the search engines then it is easier for that domain to start seeing results quickly.

The best way to do this is by acquiring an . Thousands of domains expire everyday for several different reasons. And they each go through a set process. Mike Davidson published an incredible article outlining the entire process he used to acquire NewsVine.

Don't be fooled. You may only think a few people are doing this, but it is a huge market. There are hundreds of businesses that play in this corner and have great results with it. This is real estate in the online world and the same strategies apply. Fix and flip or hold and sell.

Just be careful when you're playing here. Like any market there are shady cats out there who will publish domains stats without verification. Jerry West published an article on avoiding domain fraud that is well worth the read.

After you learn the ins and outs of this process and you are ready to acquire a domain name. Here are some of the companies to do business with.

Backorder services: These companies specialize in domain backorders. You have to backorder through them if you want to secure an expired domain that goes up for auction.

Domain escrow services: These companies handle the process of buying and selling domains. If you want to market a domain you currently own then do it here.

Making money from parked domains: I have friend who will remain nameless that has over 800 domains. He has all of them parked at GoDaddy. He is basically paying GoDaddy to make money off his domains.

There are several services out there that will share the revenue with you. This is a no-brainer for any domains you own.

Say you average, 1¢ a day from a parked domain. After 1 year that is $3.65 or half of your domain registration fee. Seriously, park your domains with a service that pays you for it.

Here are some ones to try:

If you really want to get serious about domain buying and selling Matt Smith released a full-course on acquiring expired domains.

His back-end service is top-notch, but the course will show you all the basics and give you a full understanding of how everything works.
